Services - Implantable Cardio Defibrillator ICD

Implantable Cardio Defibrillator ICD

The ICD is slightly larger than a pacemaker and is implanted in the same way. The ICD monitors and regulates the heart rhythm and rate. It is implanted usually under local anaesthetic by a specialist cardiologist and usually requires a two day hospital stay at Epworth Hospital. The ICD helps patients whose heartbeat is too fast. Patients who survive a cardiac arrest or who are at risk of a cardiac arrest may need an ICD.
